Poet, playwright and author Denis Johnson was born in Munich, West Germany, in 1949 and was raised in Tokyo, Manila and Washington. He published his first poetry collection, The Man Among the Seals, at the age of 19. His first novel, Angels, published in 1983, brought him initial fame, but it was the 1992 short story collection Jesus' Son that truly established his reputation in the literary world. In 2007, his novel Tree of Smoke won the National Book Award and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. His 2011 short story collection Train Dreams was again shortlisted for the Pulitzer Prize. He has been described by The New Yorker as a "writer's writer's writer.β
